« J’ai toujours une préférence pour le travail en studio. Il isole les gens de leur environnement. En un sens ils deviennent… des symboles d’eux-mêmes. J’ai souvent l’impression que les gens viennent me faire faire leur photo comme ils iraient voir un médecin ou une diseuse de bonne aventure: pour savoir comment il vont. Ils sont donc dépendants de moi. Je dois les mobiliser. Sinon, il n’y a rien à photographier. La concentration doit venir de moi et les prendre au jeu. Cette concentration devient parfois si forte que l’on n’entend plus les bruits du studio. Le temps s’arrête. Nous partageons un bref moment d’intense intimité. Mais elle n’est pas méritée. Elle n’a pas de passé… pas d’avenir. Et quand la séance de pose est terminée, quand l’image est faite, il n’en reste rien que la photo… la photo et une espèce de gêne. Ils s’en vont. .. et je ne les connais pas. J’ai à peine entendu ce qu’ils m’ont dit. Si je les rencontre quelque part, une semaine après, je ne m’attends pas à ce qu’ils me reconnaissent. Parce que je n’ai pas l’impression d’avoir été vraiment là. Du moins, la partie de moi qui était là… se trouve maintenant dans la photo. »
